A family-friendly trip depends on the children, the vessel and the itinerary. Give the operator ages and needs early so it can describe the actual arrangement.
Describe the children, not just the count
Share ages, swimming confidence, sleep needs and any accessibility or medical considerations. Ask how adults should supervise boarding, movement around the deck and water activities.

Ask about the current safety setup
Confirm whether suitable lifejackets are supplied for each child and whether netting, rails or cabin access need discussion. Safety equipment and procedures are operator-specific; do not infer them from photos.
Design a realistic day
Allow time for meals, rest and a slower boarding process. A shorter trip with one strong activity may work better than a full itinerary. Ask what happens if a child wants to return early or conditions become uncomfortable.
Check accommodation in detail
For overnight trips, allocate every berth before booking. Ask about bunks, access to bathrooms, ventilation and how far children sleep from supervising adults.
